Backgammon Multiplayer: A Beginner's Guide

Backgammon looks intimidating the first time you see that board full of triangles and stacked checkers, but the bones of it are simpler than chess or checkers, honestly. This version keeps the classic rules intact while dressing them up in a clean, stylish board, and it gives you three ways to play: against another person online, against the computer, or passing the device back and forth with a friend sitting next to you. Start against the computer if you've never rolled the dice before. It won't punish you for a clumsy opening, and you'll pick up the rhythm of moving pieces around the points faster than you'd expect.

Control Scheme

• Tap a triangle (a "point") to select the checker sitting on it.
• Tap the destination triangle to move your piece there, based on your dice roll.
• Switch between the multiplayer, computer, and pass-and-play modes from the main menu before starting a match.
• Watch the dice values at the top of the screen; they dictate exactly how far each checker can travel.

Top Tips

• Don't rush your checkers forward in a straight line. Spreading them out early makes it harder for your opponent to trap a lone piece.
• Leaving a single checker exposed on a point is risky. Try to move in pairs so you're building little blockades instead of easy targets.
• Pay attention to your opponent's open points. Landing on one sends their checker back, and that kind of setback can cost them the whole game.
• Bearing off gets messy if your checkers are scattered across the board, so herd them toward your home section before you start racing to finish.
• Play a few rounds against the computer first. It's a low-pressure way to internalize how the dice interact with actual strategy before you challenge a real opponent.
